MIAMI BEACH NORTH SHORE CAFE

  • Description

The North Shore Park & Youth Center addition is an infill building project located within an existing recreational park facility owned and managed by the City of Miami Beach, Florida. To the south of the North Shore Tennis Center, between two existing structures, this urban infill development responds to its’ subtropical climate, urban setting, and community uses framed by a deep overhang with full height wall to wall windows through which natural light is filtered and views are extended toward the surrounding park. The program includes restrooms, an interior café space with an outdoor raised dining area and maintains the existing tree canopies. Glavovic Studio selected materials and color palette work sympathetically and in contrast with adjacent existing building conditions. Bright white walls capture the tree canopy shadows, a bright sunny yellow recessed opening draws park users to the space, with polished concrete floors, recycled deck, and outdoor seating.

The building draws from local construction techniques with reinforced concrete masonry walls, a post-tensioned concrete slab roof; concrete slab on grade floors; storefront aluminum frame with glass; painted gypsum wallboard on insulated interior walls and ceiling; two restrooms finished exposed concrete floor, ceramic tile on walls and painted concrete ceiling. Built-in wood finish furniture and millwork, with bright yellow solid surfaces animates the interior with natural and bright colored hues are proposed.
